About Us
C.Hansford(c) The Jersey Donkey Home was founded to provide a permanent or temporary home for any donkey in need for any reason whatsoever and was incorporated before the Royal Court on 31st July 1998. The Donkeys and ponies live on a working farm and for this reason for access has to be restricted so we hold special open days at The Jersey Donkey Home for our Sponsors. We try to hold four open week-ends a year. We will write and advise our sponsors of the dates and times. There are 12 donkeys and 4 ponies and 1 mule at the Jersey Donkey Home at the present time and they are all given an opportunity to live out their lives in a caring and loving environment. All the donkeys and ponies lead an active life as possible, depending on the age and ability of the individual. They are involved with the Riding for Disabled at both Mont -a-L'Abbe and Bel Royal Schools and attend both schools each week during term time. Some of the donkey/ponies are also trained to harness and the children who are unable to sit or lie on their backs are able to go for a ride in the traps, and have the opportunity to see and touch them.
Donkey Home(c) In the summer, they attend local horse shows and take part in the Donkey Show / Pony or Family Donkey & Pony Competitions and they have a great time.
Donkey Home(c) The donkeys also attend various churches for Palm Sunday parades. Dicky has performed at the Arts Centre in pantomine and Vino is often called upon for special events including a pilgrimage to Elizabeth Castle. Donkeys and ponies are by nature herd animals and the animals at The Jersey Donkey Home are able to live in a herd environment. They live out for as much of the year as possible, wearing warm and waterproof rugs in the winter. They are only stabled when the weather is especially wet and cold.
